Clinical trials are the necessary step to translate laboratory discoveries into treatments that improve the lives, health, and vision of our patients. Trials help determine better approaches for disease prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment. All clinical studies that we participate in are designed and conducted in accordance with accepted scientific and ethical standards, regulatory requirements, and local law. Patient participation in clinical trials is always optional. Research visits may take longer than a regular clinic visit requiring additional testing and a more thorough examination of vision and the structures of the eye. A detailed description of what’s expected of volunteers is outlined in the consent form along with the benefits and risks. In order to participate in a trial, you must have a referral from your eye-care specialist and meet the required criteria to enroll in the study.
