Her first experience in the field of ophthalmology began that same year when she accepted a position at Grand Rapids Ophthalmology as an ophthalmic technician and scribe. She worked with many doctors and varied positions for 16 years. Shortly after her start date, she began working in the retinal department as an ophthalmic photographer. Kathy earned her Certified Ophthalmic Assistance status and soon after became a Certified Ophthalmic Technician.

She was hired at Retina Specialists of Michigan in 2009, where she continued her roles of technician, scribe, and ophthalmic photographer. In 2016, Kathy took time off for medical leave for 5 years; returning in 2021. She feels privileged to be a part of the research that will bring new medicine to the ophthalmic world. She realizes the importance of the studies and has great respect for the doctors and technicians who dedicate their time to the Foundation.
