Dr. Liliya Sutherland completed medical school training at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed her ophthalmology residency through Michigan State University at Metro Health in Grand Rapids. Following completion of her residency, she completed a 2 year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship with our practice at Retina Specialists of Michigan. She is continuing additional fellowship training with the Casey Eye Institute in the study of inherited retinal disease in order to bring this area of expertise to West Michigan. This ophthalmic genetics fellowship includes training in the evaluation, diagnosis, and genetic counseling of those with a wide range of ophthalmic genetic disorders and how to distinguish them from other masquerading diseases.
Dr. Sutherland is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology. American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retinal Specialists, American Osteopathic Association, Michigan Society of Eye Physicians, the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology.
Also, member of Sigma Sigma Phi National An Honorary Osteopathic Service Fraternity
Dr. Sutherland has participated in multiple research studies and has published several articles and book chapters. Her interests include: diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, inherited retinal diseases, and uveitis/ocular inflammatory disorders. She is currently investigating therapies for age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
