The Foundation for Vision Research is delighted to host another educational event. We extend a warm welcome to eye care specialists in the West Michigan area to join us for an informative evening filled with appetizers and drinks, followed by two captivating presentations by esteemed experts in the field. Our featured speakers, Thomas Aaberg Jr., MD, and Edward Korot, MD, will share insights into groundbreaking developments in MacTel therapy and the latest advancements in AI research within the realm of retinal care.
Who Should Attend
Optometrists, ophthalmic specialists, general ophthalmologists, fellows, and ophthalmology residents encompassing all levels of experience and knowledge.
Objectives
- To describe the clinical findings, natural history, and patient journey for individuals with Juxtafoveal Retinal Telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel).
- To educate clinicians on encapsulated cell technology and the potential therapeutic role in MacTel.
- To provide a better understanding of AI retina research and demonstrate a way that they could be involved themselves in open source/access tools.

Speakers
Thomas Aaberg Jr., MD
Ophthalmologist and Ocular Oncologist at Retina Specialists of Michigan
Dr. Aaberg is board-certified in ophthalmology with extensive training in retinal diseases and ocular tumors. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, completed a residency and vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and an ocular oncology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. After completing his medical training, he was the Director of the Ocular Oncology Unit at Emory University, the Director of Ocular Photography and Ultrasonography, and the Atlanta Veterans Administration Hospital’s Retina Service Director.
Dr. Aaberg is passionate about teaching and research. He is currently investigating therapies for ocular melanoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vascular disorders, as well as advancing vitreoretinal surgery techniques. He is an adjunct clinical professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. intraocular lens fixation, and uveitis/ocular inflammatory disorders.
Edward Korot, MD
Ophthalmologist at Retina Specialists of Michigan
Dr. Korot is board-certified in Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmologists, the American Society of Retinal Specialists, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Dr. Korot returned home to Michigan after completing his surgical retina training at Stanford. While there, he received numerous awards including the prestigious Michels fellowship presented to the top fellows in the country for recognition of research, medical and surgical training. He has been recognized as a “top 100“ rising star by The Ophthalmologist magazine. In his growing career, he has received multiple grants and awards and has already published over 30 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Korot is guided by the goal of maximally scaling improvements in patients’ lives through technology. His expertise in tech and medical AI is honed by his previous work at companies such as Google and startups. He is a frequent speaker at international conferences and also innovates in the operating room having designed high-tech surgical tools. He is also passionate about education and collaborative research and is on the faculty at Stanford University as an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor. He is also an honorary researcher at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London UK.
